Trustees
Annual Report 2009-2010
2009-2010
proved to be a very good year, building
upon our previous work but also on new
ventures. We developed many new projects,
community events, and a 2009 annual Community
Town Show, in partnership with Bognor
Regis Town Council, Arun District Council
and Bognor Regis Horticultural Society.
We
are pleased to report that Bognor CAN
continues to demonstrate a proven track
record for positive engagement with hard
to reach communities, partnership working
and successful project delivery. Organisations
from the voluntary, statutory and private
sectors regularly approach us for support
to deliver projects and activities including
hosting a community day to produce artwork
for huge hoarding's, to tidy up the old
derelict LEC refrigerator site. This has
all happened despite working hard to seek
core funding with tremendous help of Paul
Foreman and Andrew Davenport from Arun
Neighborhood Network, to submit an application
for 3 years core funding from the Big
Lottery 'Reaching Communities'.
It
has been a challenging yet exciting year,
with the help of many organisations, volunteers
and led by Carol Fullick our Development
Manager. We would like to thank everyone
for the hard work they have done to make
this year so successful.
An organisation
such as Bognor CAN would not be able to
operate without the grass roots support
of the volunteers, who are local people
working to support other local people
and making us a real 'community action
network'’.
Thank
you to all of the volunteers, Carol, the
local community and partnership organisations
with whom we have worked.
We
would like more Trustees to join us, so
if you believe you can help us to support
many more local people, have skills, a
passion to make a difference and can commit
a little time, we would love to hear from
you.

DEVELOPMENT
MANAGERS REPORT
As
always Bognor CAN has been very busy in
April 2009 we launched exercise classes
for adults, commissioned by the Health
& Well Being Partnership. The aim
of the classes were to improve health
and reduce obesity. After taster sessions,
the community decided on Boxercise and
dance aerobics.
In
May 2009 we launched a 'grow your own
fruit & veg' to encourage community
families to grow their own vegetables
in containers. Families grew tomatoes,
herbs, strawberries, potatoes, peas, beans,
lettuce and more. Children also learnt
about how vegetables are good for them
through fun activities. Some of the participants
entered the produce they had grown in
our 2009 Community Town Show. We hope
to continue with this project in the future
In
June 2009 we worked with a local business
Sime Darby, who commissioned us to facilitate
a community arts day to design hoardings
for their land on the Shripney Road, Bognor
Regis. The theme was 'Community, Environment
and Sea Front'. The idea of the project
was that the community would take ownership
of the project. We engaged over 200 people
of all ages from the deprived wards of
Bognor Regis.
During
the month we also entered the 2009 Bognor
Regis Carnival, where Bognor CAN was the
overall prize winner.
During
the summer months we held three community
car boot sales to enable Bognor CAN and
local people to raise much needed funds.
On August 22nd 2009 we delivered
our third Community Town Show which was
well attended and with glorious weather.
The event hosted many activities for people
of all ages focusing on health, the environment
and community safety.
In
September 2009 we were commissioned by
Arun District Crime & Disorder Partnership
to deliver a 40 week football project
for young people aged 9 to 16 years of
age. We ran this on Saturday afternoons,
aiming to reduce anti-social behaviour
by young people.
We
repeated our Community Christmas Fair
once again on 28th November
in partnership with Bognor Regis Youth
& Community Centre, which was well
attended by people of all ages.
In
November we started a pilot project 'Lunch
Club for Older People' promoting winter
warming healthy recipes and providing
a social network, to reduce social isolation.
We aim to develop many more activities
for older people in the future.
In
December 2009 Bognor CAN was nominated
by one of our community volunteers for
a 'Special Achievement Award' provided
by the Chichester and Bognor Observer
for support to the community. Volunteers
accompanied me to attend the award ceremony
at the Chichester Festival Theatre.
In
addition to the above we continue to manage
and support a Martial Arts project for
children aged three years of age upwards.
This takes place over three hours on Friday
afternoons and early evenings.
We
continued to provide training events including
the First aid courses, volunteer management,
training for trainers and Food Hygiene
Certificates for local people, volunteers
and partner organisations and work with
voluntary and statutory sectors, to identify
gaps in services and deliver activities
that will meet local need.
In
addition to our project delivery and after
many months of hard work, we submitted
a grant application to the Big Lottery
Fund 'Reaching Communities' and in mid
March we heard we had been successful
and awarded £146,448 to cover our
core costs for the next three years, employ
a project assistant and enable us to deliver
many more projects and activities for
people of all ages, from the Local Neighborhood
Improvement Areas of Bognor Regis.
